Smith & Burrows - When the Thames Froze
When I dream tonight, I'll dream of you
When the Thames froze
So tell everyone that there's hope in your heart
Tell everyone or it will tear you apart
The end of Christmas day, when there's nothing left to say
The years go by so fast, let's hope the next beats the last
When the Thames froze
So tell everyone that there's hope in your heart
Tell everyone or it will tear you apart
The end of Christmas day, when there's nothing left to say
The years go by so fast, let's hope the next beats the last

Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart
No idea how we've managed to pass over this lady for so long, but I've corrected that mistake now. Oh, and if you want to know how Bonnie Tyler got her trademark voice, there is a cool article about it over at cracked.com.
Unfortunately, for me this song is forever linked with a nervous brakedown in my first year of college. And no, it wasn't because of the song, it just tipped the glass over.

John Mellencamp - R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.

Gloria Jones vs. Soft Cell vs. Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love
This cover song made Marilyn Manson (at least his music if not his looks/videos) digestable for the wide world. Soft Cell has already made an appearance here with this song and it's small wonder - to my knowledge we might've as well posted it in our One Hit Wonders week - probably one of the best of that sort, though apparently they had a string of hits in the UK. I was rather surprised that it was actually a cover as well, the original being performed by Gloria Jones - tainting love since 1964.

Gary Moore vs. Nightwish - Over the Hills and Far Away
Get ready for dramatic drum beats, tantalizin violins and a momentous power package of a song - regardless whether the voice that delivers it is male of female. Over the Hills and Far Away is Gary Moore's song from 1987; Nightwish's cover is from the eponimous EP from 2001 (incidentally, the song that got me into Nightwish).
Metallica vs. Motorhead - Enter Sandman
Monsters of rock Motorhead covering monsters of rock Metallica: Enter Sandman!

Bananarama vs. Ace of Base - Cruel Summer
Wiki says Bananarama is the all-female group with the most chart entries. Also, they were a girl band since before the Spice Girls made it cool. Ace of Base were the ABBA of the 90s, making Swedish pop hip once again. As for Cruel Summer... all you need to do is open the window.
Blondie vs. Nouvelle Vague - Heart Of Glass
Female voice vs. female voice, singing about fragile hearts.

Bob Dylan vs.Guns'n'Roses - Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Another Bob Dylan classic - Knockin' on Heaven's Door and wiki only knows how often this one has been covered. Guns'n'Roses did it their way and opened the eyes of a generation to some 60s heroes. And I've intentionally skipped another famous cover by Eric Clapton, we'll be hearing more of him later.
Depeche Mode vs. Johnny Cash - Personal Jesus
Your own, personal, Jesus is brought today by Depeche Mode and by Johnny Cash.

Bob Dylan vs. Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue vs. Florian Pittis - Death Is Not the End
A classic depressive song or anti-depressant, as you will. The original is by one of the most covered artists out there, I guess, with the cover being a hauntingly beautiful duet by Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue. Bonus - the Romanian translation by folk legend Florian Pittis.

USA for Africa - We Are the World
Bob Geldof's 1984 Band Aid also inspired the creation in 1985 of United Support of Artists for Africa, lead by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. Both supergroups directed raised money for famine relief in Ethiopia. USA for Africa featured 47 artists and this single together with the Hands Across America event raised almost $100 million.

N-Eat Groove & Rocca - Scream
Firma were one of the most promising alternative bands in Romania before more or less fading into oblivion (after a rather uninspired video for Baby's Crying, pretty much mimicking Radiohead's Just). If parallels be allowed and proportions kept in mind, lead singer Rocca's collaboration with N-Eat Groove sounds quite a bit like what Brian Molko did with Timo Maas. A pity endurance is not also paralleled.

Bryan Adams & Tina Turner - It's Only Love
Bryan Adams' hugest album was probably 1984's Reckless, riding high on the radio-friendly rock wave. Tina Turner has been rocking it out since 1958 and still going strong. It's Only Love was a duet by the two awesomes featured on said album. Here's however a live version with great chemistry from a 1999 concert. One can only imagine how it is to celebrate your birthday and 40 years of performance on stage. To paraphrase some other giants who just won't stop - it's only love for rock'n'roll but we like it.

Derek Sherinian, Billy Idol, Slash, Tony Franklin - In the Summertime
Wherever radio waves reach, there's probably no person alive who doesn't know this song. You might however not know this version of it, so let me throw some Wikipedia bits at'cha, to figure just why it sounds so awesome.
Derek Sherinian (born August 25, 1966) is an American keyboardist who has toured and recorded for Alice Cooper, Billy Idol, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kiss, and Black Label Society. He was also a member of Dream Theater from 1994–1999, is the founder of Planet X and also one of the founding members of Black Country Communion.
William Michael Albert Broad (born 30 November 1955[1]), known professionally as Billy Idol, is an English rock musician. A member of the Bromley Contingent of Sex Pistols fans, Idol first achieved fame in the punk rock era as a member of the band Generation X. He then embarked on a successful solo career, and was a member of the MTV-driven "Second British Invasion" of the United States.
Saul Hudson (born July 23, 1965), better known by his nickname Slash, is a British-American musician and songwriter. He is best known as the former lead guitarist of the American hard rock band Guns N' Roses, with whom he achieved worldwide success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. During his later years with Guns N' Roses, Slash formed the side project Slash's Snakepit. He then co-founded the supergroup Velvet Revolver, which re-established him as a mainstream performer in the mid to late 2000s. Slash has since released two solo albums.
Anthony James "Tony" Franklin is an English rock musician, best known for his work on the fretless bass guitar with Roy Harper, The Firm, Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers, John Sykes' Blue Murder, David Gilmour, Kate Bush, Whitesnake, and most recently with Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Anouk & Sarah Bettens - I Alone
This song is featuring three magic ingredients to be awesome. Firstly, I Alone is one of the singles from Throwing Copper, the album that brought Live their commercial breakthrough. Second, the voices are the most successful female vocalists the BeNeLux has offered. Anouk may be remembered only for her hit Nobody's Wife, but she has continued success in her home country Netherlands. Sarah Bettens is the lead singer of Belgian rockers K's Choice.

UB40 & Chrissie Hynde - I Got You Babe
Sonny and Cher's classica duet I Got You, Babe has known quite a lot of versions, including one "performed" by Cher and... Beavis & Butthead. Since it's so hot and summery, though, let's get a bit raggae. Raggae pop band UB40 hail from Birmingham, UK, while Hereford native Chrissie Hynde is the leader of the Pretenders. And they got each other since 1985.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds with P.J. Harvey - Henry Lee
The story told through this song is centuries old, but no version is as successful as the one by Nick Cave and P. J. Harvey. A story of love, disappointment, murder and punishment.
Seether & Amy Lee - Broken
They are a post-grunge band from South Africa. She is from California and better known as being the founding member and voice of Evanescence. Together, they clain to be Broken.

Bryan Ferry - Slave to Love
This is a typical case of saving the best for last, this time taking on the sound of the voice of Roxy Music. One of the most sultry songs ever written (and sung). It has that delta heat of Black Velvet and belongs to Bryan Ferry.

Touch and Go - Would You...?
Reaching back to Eurodance tracks of the 90s for Saturdays and there's no small supply of sexy time songs there. And that even without playing anything from the obviously named German duo E-rotic. Here's something a bit more jazzy and just as direct.
Friday, July 26, 2013
Whitesnake - Slow and Easy
Now, I am not much of a gerontophiliac, if you think this is where we're headed today. But David Coverdale somehow manages to be one sexy old geezer. He's never been quite shy to sing about it and I doubt he heard many no's to the invite below.

Rammstein - Mann gegen Mann
We have skipped these guys in the German week cause they were duh-level obvious. But they've a reputation for scandalous songs and this is one of them. Oh, and the video is probably NSFW.

Cyndi Lauper - She Bop
Cyndi Lauper has an album with a title that describes her perfectly - She's So Unusual. That album incidentally features one of the songs that lead to the creation of Parental Advisory stickers. She Bop was the culprit as it created a fuss among puritans outraged by its topic: masturbation.

Depeche Mode - Master and Servant
A Pain That I'm Used To is a bit too new for Ruby Tuesday, so we can skip the S&M part today and just focus on the D&s. Depeche can suit any mood and need just fine.

K.D. Lang - Constant Craving
If Saint Lu is craving, she still has a long way to go to the state K.D. Lang's in, which is Constant Craving.

Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box
I think we don't have enough Nirvana around here. And because the 90s are not 10 years ago, as I sometimes think, this song is actually 20 years old.

Tom Waits - Hell Broke Luce
A voice like the creaking irons of torture instruments of hell. Because it's Monday and Hell Broke Luce.

Alphabeat - Fascination
Because nothing invites happiness in quite like retaining a childlike fascination for the world. The Danes from Alphabeat can testify that with their summer hit from 2007.

Doing Time - I Was a Ye-Ye Girl
Get yourselves dancing while celebrating the free spirits and high moods of the 60s. For your information, this is what wiki says: Yé-yé was a style of pop music that emerged from France, Italy and Spain in the early 1960s. The term "yé-yé" derived from "yeah! yeah!".

The Last Shadow Puppets - Standing Next to Me
The Last Shadow Puppets is a side-project of the frontmen of Arctic Monkeys and The Rascals. Because beautiful things come out from friendship.

Joe Cocker - I Come in Peace
He comes in peace, like all anciently wise creatures of the Universe do. This one's off Joe Cocker's 22nd's album, released in November last year, and dammit, he's been going on and on since 1961. Most of us can't even say that about our lives, let alone our careers.

Abba - The Day Before You Came
A song so old, that Dallas was new and thrilling back then. It even gets a shout-out.

Sportfreunde Stiller - Applaus
Never knew much about Sportfreunde Stiller other that they existed... However, I saw them live last year and it was a really enjoyable show. And what better way to end the German week, than in a resounding round of applause.

Mark Oh - Tears Don't Lie
Speaking of German DJs of whom even noobs of the electronic scene like me have heard...

Marius Müller-Westernhagen - Sexy
Well, sexy is not necessarily something I would call this guy... but since a sexy has made him so miserable, I think he deserves a bit of attention as a consolation prize.
